Oradea (www.romaniatourism.com)
Oradea is a town located in the west of Romania in the county of Bihor
about 15km from the Hungarian border. It has a history that goes back to 300BC
and at one time the area was included within the Hungarian border, which is why
many Hungarians still live in that area and the language is spoken by some.
It
covers 13.5 square miles (35 sq km) with a population of 230,000.
The town has developed with a number of large stores constructed on the edge of
town, such as Carrefours. Also some new build housing developments, but the sale
of housing is slow as Romanians cannot afford the deposit and mortgage repayments
required. The external appearance is one of economic growth and affluence,
which to some extent is true, but hidden behind this are the numerous poor families. |
